Sun Screen Application Techniques

Most people do not apply sunscreen correctly. In a study from the University of New Mexico it was shown that up to 60% of those studied missed one important part of their body all together (ears, front of neck and back of neck).

  1. Use a sunscreen rated at least SPF 15 and must include one of the following ingredients for broad spectrum protection (Parsol 1789, Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide).
  2. Use at least one ounce of sunscreen per application. In general most people use less than 1/2 the amount of sunscreen they need for getting good protection.
  3. Re-apply with at least one ounce of SPF 15 sunscreen no longer than every two hours. Recent research shows that it doesn’t matter whether you use sunscreen with SPF 15 or SPF 30. What does matter is reapplying frequently and going no longer than 2 hours between applications.
  4. Apply a lip balm rated SPF-15 and with one of the following ingredients (Avobenzone,Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide) at same frequency as rest of skin.
Additional Protection Advice
  1. Wear sunglasses that block 99-100% of UV Radiation. Sunglasses that provide 99-100% UVA and UVB protection will greatly reduce sun exposure that can lead to cataracts and other eye damage. Check the label when buying sunglasses.
  2. Your hair is skin too! Wear a broad brimmed hat. Clothing doesn’t protect you from UV radiation unless you treat it with a new laundry additive, Rit™ Sun Guard.
  3. Avoid sunburn like the plague.
  4. Avoid sunlamps and tanning parlors. The light source from sun beds and sunlamps damages the skin and unprotected eyes. It’s a good idea to avoid artificial sources of UV light.
"90-95% of all skin damage including wrinkles and skin cancers
comes from exposure to the sun."
